Bernie ][ The Rescue 2.5.2
license & registration information

Limitations Of The Unregistered Version

You can use Bernie unregistered for evaluation purposes. If you think Bernie delivers, you might want to register it. Before you're doing so, however, some features are not available:

Bernie does not save Preferences to disk. Every time you start a new Bernie session, it reverts to the default settings. Most notably, "Low-Level Disk Support" is enabled by default which you should probably disable. (With Low-Level Disk Support enabled, Bernie recognizes 800k disks only. It's a special mode for running FTA demos and some other non-standard software, but usually you should disable it for running GS/OS and most other applications.)

You can't connect a serial port or use InkDirect: the port selection popups do not list available serial ports of your Mac. Communications support is only available in the registered release.

Bernie quits after 30 minutes: it just says goodbye. Because this might cause loss of data, we do not recommend doing serious stuff with unregistered Bernies. Bernie does not offer you a chance to save your work after 30 minutes.

No default startup disk: you can select a default startup disk but Bernie won't remember it. This basically means that this feature is not available.

Turning This Demo Into The Real Thing

Now that you downloaded Bernie, you might want to turn it into the full, no-limits variant. How so?

All you need is to register Bernie. Upon registering Bernie, you will receive an unlock code from F.E.Systems that turns your current demo version into the full version. To register your copy, hop to the secure online shopping page at https://order.kagi.com/?XF and there you go.

Very Very Important Registration Info

Registering Bernie is almost as complicated as writing your own emulation software, but we have tried to provide to-the-point information in this matter. To learn how you can register your copy, please read the chapter "Registering" located in the Bernie User's Manual.

Our company teamed up with Kagi Shareware, a company specialized in processing shareware fees. There are some important details that often lead to added overall confusion:

We can only register your software if you a) have a permanent e-mail address or b) order the preregistered CD-ROM from Shareware Solutions II

This restriction is not meant to discriminate people without e-mail account but to make our lifes easier. Since we do not correspond in postal mail, we need to send you your unlock code via e-mail. The same applies to all technical support and inquiries: e-mail only. If you do not have a permanent e-mail address, you can still order Bernie from Shareware Solutions II in form of a CD-ROM. The CD-ROM is priced at US$60 and includes the required license.

The full, end of all registration information is in the User's Manual

For concrete details on how to order Bernie online, per e-mail, fax or postal mail is outlined in the "Registering" section of the User's Manual. The manual is available online (http://www.magnet.ch/emutech/Bernie/Documentation/) or included with this archive.

Kagi does not know what an Apple II is, what Bernie is, who we are

If you have technical questions or any other comments that do not directly concern your order, please contact us. We are eagerly waiting for your e-mails at emutech@magnet.ch for registration questions and woof@kagi.com for technical support. (Note: though woof@kagi.com seems to be affiliated with Kagi, it is not. It will be forwarded to our mailboxes.)

 The Register application

The Bernie archive includes a small application that takes your order and brings it into an electronic form that can be processed by Kagi automatically.

Educational pricing: Please e-mail before ordering

Yes, we have special prices for educational institutions. A computer lab (15 licenses max.) is $150. Site licenses vary with kind of institution and special arrangements - please e-mail us for details at <emutech@magnet.ch>. Individual licenses are available at $15 each (min. 2 per order).
Whatever meets your needs, please e-mail F.E.Systems at <emutech@magnet.ch> before placing educational orders. Thank you!
